through the prism of history

This reduction relief print was created to mark the centenary of the battle at the Somme in which the 36th Ulster Division sustained heavy casualties in July 1916. It was also the first battle in which the British army used their newly developed tank. This development in warfare initially helped to secure an area of German held territory due to its surprise use. However, a follow up strategy was missing and the Germans regained all the ground they lost in a counter attack a few days later.
I've used the fractured effect of the surface to suggest both the confusion of battle and the way our view of events in the past becomes faceted by many readings and subsequent testimony.
