red forms 2

In this drawing different densities of colour create the floating forms against the background 'field'. Within this formal construct, mysterious shapes inhabit the space. The 'field', background or page has been variously considered in the history of art. At one time the rectangle of a picture was considered as the frame of a window for the viewer to look out on the world created by the artist. In some respects, in our culture, this still holds true despite the influence of modern art which emphasised flatness and a resistance to illusion of perspective in pictures.
The tonal densities in this sketch create a sense of colour perspective and recession in what is essentially a flat plane.
