sgraffito figure

relief print
edition of three
300 mm x 190 mm

I often find my drawings inventing sculptural form. This image, I think, was influenced by Cycladic art of the Aegean (circa 3300 -1100 BCE) with its focus on the stylised human figure carved from marble.

sgraffito is a technique where different coloured layers are laid over each other and the design is made by removing or scratching through a layer or layers to reveal the colour beneath. It is used in decorating plastered walls and in ceramics. In my print I cut the linear design and printed it in relief in white ink. I then coloured the underneath by staining the paper once the printed ink had dried.
